People are demanding Vicky Phelan gets to attend White House St Patrick’s Day celebrations instead of Micheal Martin

Social media users are demanding that Vicky Phelan represent Ireland at the White House instead of Michael Martin.

An Independent Councillor from Co Kerry has suggested that Vicky Phelan should represent Ireland at the White House instead of Micheal Martin on St Patrick’s Day.

In a post on Facebook, Councillor Charlie Farrelly suggested that Mrs Phelan could present a bowl of shamrock at the White House if she felt up to taking 50 minute drive to the White House.

The post which has gained traction on social media comes as there has been many questions over the Taoiseach’s position on attending the annual event this year.

Although no official decision has been made in regards to the Taoiseach’s attendance this year, the Independent Councillor Farrelly said he thinks that Mr Martin shouldn’t attend and lead by example.

Farrelly wrote that he wasn’t knocking the Taoiseach but instead he should show solidarity with the Irish people who have been asked not to travel abroad.

He added that he came up with the idea of putting Mrs Phelan’s name forward after hearing her story on her latest round of treatment in Maryland on RTE’s The Late Late Show.

The suggestion which has gained attention on social media has also caught the attention of Mrs Phelan who wrote the following on Twitter: “That’s the first I’ve heard of it….BUT I certainly wouldn’t say No if I was asked. It would be an honour.”
