Just 24 hours after German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced new lockdown plans for Easter, she abruptly dropped them, apologizing to “all citizens” and admitting she made a “mistake”.
The announcement was met with a massive public backlash which prompted Chancellor Merkel to quickly arrange a video conference on Wednesday with Germany’s 16 state governors, who are responsible for imposing restrictions, informing them the plans were now scrapped.
“The idea of an Easter shutdown was created with the best of intentions,” she said, but conceded the plan had been hasty and could not be implemented in such a short time.
“This mistake is my mistake alone,” Merkel said on Wednesday having only announced the plans on Tuesday.
The sudden reversal is a clear demonstration to people in Germany and other countries with Orwellian lockdowns that popular resistance can result in their political elite backing down from taking away their God given rights.
