The hot weather is proving to be difficult for pets and owners are advised to give them extra care at the moment.
According to RTE, vets have been telling pet owners to watch out for heatstroke in their pets. Dr Fern Holden highlighted the fact that heatstroke “can progress very quickly and often results in death”.
The advice is for pets to have lots of water and places to sit in the shade. They should be taken for walks in the coolest part of the day and should never be left in cars in the heat.
Dogs Trust has given some helpful advice for bringing dogs for walk, highlighting the fact that owners should check the surfaces by pressing your hand to the ground. If the ground is too hot for your hand, then it’s too hot for dog’s paws.
A dog is likely to be overheated if it is panting, lethargy and a rapid heart rate, in which case they should be given a drink of water and cooled down.
