Plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds are now banned in England

From the 2nd of October businesses in England will be banned from distributing plastic straws, stirrers, and cotton buds to customers in an effort to reduce single use plastics.

The legislation was initially planned to take effect in April, but the UK government decided to delay the new law due to Covid-19. Exemptions will be made for disabled customers with a need for plastic straws according to Sky News.

The Department of the Environment said that Downing Street is ‘firmly committed to tackling single-use plastics’. According to Defra, every year the UK was using 5 billion straws, 316 million stirrers, and 1.8 billion cotton buds.
