A 32-yr-old Polish man appeared in court in Drogheda, Co. Louth today charged with the murder of his own mother in Ardee, Co. Louth on Tuesday.

Tomasz Piotrowski, with an address at Cherrybrook also in Ardee, was remanded in custody for a week.

His mother, Elzbieta Piotrowska, 57, a mother-of-two who was originally from Poland, was attacked with an axe and killed in the Clonmore estate on the North side of Ardee on Tuesday morning.

It’s understood that her husband had gone to work at the time of the murder while her daughter is still living in Poland.

According to RTE, the man’s solicitor said he was concerned about his client’s mental health while the Judge granted free legal aid to the accused.

He is due to appear again by video link at Cloverhill District Court next week.
