Under the proposed cuts cardinals will recieve a 10% pay cut beginning from  next month, whilst priests within the church will face cuts between 3 and 8%.

It is understood that the new measures will also see all pay rises suspended until 2023.

Announcing the pay cuts the Vatican said the Pope is against firing high ranking officials within the church, but measures are needed to address the €50m deficit caused by the pandemic.

It is believed that the proposed cuts will see cardinals having there average €5,000 monthly pay cut from the beginning of April.
