Pope Francis has suggested that NATO may have provoked the current conflict in Ukraine by encroaching on Russia’s boarders, leaving President Putin with no choice but to take action.

Speaking to the Italian Corriere della Sera newspaper the Pope said that “barking of NATO at Russia’s door” may have forced Putin’s hand in launching his special military operation to neutralize and “de-nazify” Ukraine.

The Pope also condemned the weapons industry and said the “arms trade is a scandal” that “few oppose.”

“I can’t answer, I’m too far away, to the question of whether it is right to supply the Ukrainians,” Francis said. “There are international interests in every bit. One cannot think that a free state can wage war on another free state. In Ukraine it was the others who created the conflict.”

While western propaganda has simply portrayed the invasion of Ukraine by Russia as the act of a madman, namely Vladimir Putin, more intelligent and nuanced analysis with background knowledge of the conflict has acknowledged that NATIO’s incessant expansion coupled with a Western backed coup in Ukraine in 2014 played a role in bringing about this war.
