Pope Francis has given an extraordinary blessing on Friday evening in an ‘Urbi et Orbi’ from St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome in which the faithful were asked to join him in prayers for an end to global pandemic of the Coronavirus.

The ‘Urbi et Orbi’ which translates to (‘to the city [of Rome] and to the world’) denotes a papal address and apostolic blessing given by the pope on certain solemn occasions was offered in the hopes of invoking divine intervention to end the spreading Covid-19 virus.

The blessing was offered at 5PM GMT on Friday and the Pope had offered a plenary indulgence to all faithful who joined him in prayer.

An indulgence may be plenary (remits all temporal “punishment” required to cleanse the soul from attachment to anything but God) or partial (remits only part of the temporal “punishment”, i.e. cleansing, due to sin).
