By selecting JD Vance as his running mate, Donald Trump is indicating that, should the Republican nominee prevail in November, the US would likely turn its attention back to Asia rather than Europe. Vance is a fervent opponent of help for Ukraine, reports RTE.

Best-selling author and 39-year-old retired US Marine Mr. Vance has similar ideas with the outgoing president, and if he wins Democrat Joe Biden, his foreign policy stances may influence Mr. Trump’s second term in office.

“I gotta be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another as a country,” the senator from Ohio said on a podcast in April, reports RTE.

Earlier this year, while Russia was making inroads on the battlefield, Republican legislators blocked the ratification of $61 billion (€55.9 million) in fresh military aid for Ukraine, which included Mr. Vance as one of their most ardent opponents.

Since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the US has given Kyiv military support worth tens of billions of euros.

However, Mr. Vance and other congressional backers of Trump contend that the US cannot keep funding the war indefinitely and that a Trump victory in November would cast doubt on future US aid to Ukraine, reports RTE.

Given that Mr. Trump has promised to put an end to the crisis swiftly, there is a chance that Ukraine may be forced to deal with Russia from a disadvantage.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that, despite suggestions that Trump’s government would be more pro-Kremlin, he was not worried about the possibility of another Trump term in office, reports RTE.
