“Prepare well before you go” – Irish tourists warned over Spanish heatwave of 42c forecast

Spain continues to be a top destination for Irish holidaymakers, drawn by its sunny beaches, vibrant resorts, and cultural attractions, reports The Mirror.

However, those planning trips in the coming days are being warned about an intense, unusual heatwave affecting the country.

A weather alert has been issued as temperatures are forecast to soar far beyond what is typical for this time of year. Forecast maps are showing deep red hues, with some regions set to experience highs exceeding 40C this week, reports The Mirror.

Spain’s national weather service, AEMET, has confirmed that a strong high-pressure system located over the Azores is now dominating weather patterns across the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

After a cooler, wetter start to the season, conditions have shifted dramatically, bringing “extremely stable conditions, virtually clear skies and high levels of sunshine”, reports The Mirror.

Nighttime temperatures are also set to become increasingly uncomfortable, especially over the weekend, with many areas not expected to drop below 20C after dark.

According to AEMET, the Canary Islands along with northern Galicia and the Cantabrian coast will be spared the worst of the heat thanks to cooler trade winds. Meanwhile, temperatures in inland Mallorca are forecast to rise above 30C starting Friday, reports The Mirror.

Irish holidaymakers travelling to Spain are urged to take precautions in the extreme heat, such as staying well-hydrated, avoiding the midday sun, and keeping updated with local forecasts.

AEMET has released an informative advisory, which can be accessed here.

Back in Ireland, the weather is set to turn more unsettled, with Met Éireann forecasting “there will be rain and showers each day”, reports The Mirror.
