Proposed new rules might mean that those motorists caught speeding could face heavier penalties, depending on the speed they were travelling at.
The new legislation, proposed by Minister for Transport Shane Ross, might see those caught driving 30km/h over the set speed limit face a €2,000 fine and a court appearance.
Mr. Ross proposed a similar scheme in the past, but it met with heavy opposition from rural TDs.
