Public could face €50 on the spot fine for refusing to wear face mask

The Government could introduce on the spot fines for people who refuse to wear a face mask and travel outside their county.

The idea of on the spot fines has been suggested by the Tanaiste Leo Varadkar at a Fine Gael parliamentary meeting.

Although no official decision has been made, it is understood that the Tanaiste has suggested that those who refuse to wear a face mask should be fined €50 unless they have a legitimate reason.

Meanwhile those who travel outside their county for non-essential reasons could face fines of €200.

It is believed that the idea is being mooted in order to educate and encourage people to surpress the spread of the virus.
