Gardai were told to wear masks if they could not maintain social distancing and could be in close contact with someone for more than 15 minutes.
Garda headquarters said Gardaí on duty would wear the masks in closed situations, e.g. on patrols, public transport, shops or in someone’s home.
However, masks are not required for outdoor surveillance, for example. for foot or bicycle patrols or at checkpoints.
The masks were distributed on Monday morning.
