Recent report shows that the HSE received more than 20,000 complaints regarding patient care last year

According to a report published in the Irish Times  this morning it is understood that the HSE has received more than 20,000 complaints regarding patient care.

The report suggests that the HSE received on average 400 complaints a week, which marks a rise of 50% from the year 2013.
The report also shows an increase in patients who were dissatisfied with the outcome of the investigation of their complaint.Figures suggest that 216 patients had requested a further review of their complaint, which marks a significant rise from the previous year.

The report, states that 8,375 complaints were made last year about the current state of HSE services, which marked a 23% increase. The report also stated that less than seven out of 10 complaints were dealt with in the 30 day review period. The majority of complaints made by patients related to poor communication and information (3,517 complaints), safe and effective care (2,520) and access to services (2,130).

Meanwhile patient complaints regarding voluntary hospitals significantly increased last year, with the HSE receiving 10,752 complaints, almost double the complaints compared to 2013. However the vast majority of complaints regarding voluntary hospitals were subsequently dealt with within the 30 day period. Figures showed that 3,032 patients complained about safe and effective care, whilst a further 2,979 complained about communication and information, whilst a further 2,838 complained about access.

The HSE also dealt with a further 399 complaints regarding the disability Act in relation to children’s assessment of need for services.
