If you thought that the Irish Government was being kind and supportive when granting the €350 emergency Covid-19 payment, think again, as it has emerged today that officials crafted the scheme as taxable income.
This means that the almost 600,000 people receiving the payment now might be forced to cough back most of it in taxes later this year, likely with a little extra to ensure the Government recoups the expense, and then some.
The Government appears to be setting this windfall up now, as the caretaker Taoiseach insisted yesterday that ‘there’s no such thing as free money‘.
The no free money rule does not seem to apply to ministers and other associates to the Government, however, who are maintaining their full wages, expenses entitlements, etc. during the pandemic.
Let us know what you think about this latest move from the Irish Government.
