Report finds that 46 children suffered significant harm at HSE-run mental health service – Taoiseach says it is “very, very serious”

A review of care given to more than 1300 children at a mental health facility in Kerry has found that 46 children suffered serious harm.

According to RTE, the Taoiseach Michael Martin has said that the matter is “very, very serious” and “unacceptable”.   The service, South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) was run by the HSE and is said to have had insufficiently trained staff and that some of the children had been harmed by diagnoses and treatments.

The review found that 46 children had suffered harm, considerable weight gain, sedation during daytime and elevated blood pressure.  It found that there was no real system in place for monitoring and checking prescriptions and diagnoses given to the children.

Government is considering the 35 recommendations made by the report but the Taoiseach said that it was very important to say that none of this was the parents’ fault.
