The Road Safety Authority of Ireland (RSAI) published the results of a survey made to one thousand drivers regarding their behaviour on the road.
According to the study, 11% of drivers admited to have consumed alcohol before driving in the past 12 months, more than a third of them said they had two or more drinks.
Regarding the mobile usage while on the road, 36% of drivers had talked on the mobile using a hands-free device, while 14% of them admitted to have talked or handled the phone. 6% sent text mesages while driving and 3% checked their apps on the road.
And when it comes to speeding, most drivers exceed the 50km/h limit by less than 10km (69% in total: 4% very often, 12% often, 31% sometimes and 21% rarely) and 58% do so by more than 10km. Drivers also exceed the 100km/h limit frequently: 61% of them admitted to do so by less than 10km and 50% surpassed it by more than 10km (with a risky 24% recognizing to do this “very often”, “often” or “sometimes”, and 26% “rarely”).
Cyclists were also deemed reckless by the study, with 38% saying that they don’t always wear a helmet, and 13% not wearing it because it afects negatively the way their hair looks.
