Road safety garda numbers are not reducing, Commissioner claims

The Oireachtas Committee on Transport was informed by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris that the force’s road safety activities are not seeing a reduction in staff, reports RTE.

In order to respond to inquiries on the increasing number of fatalities on Irish roads, Commissioner Harris appeared before the Joint Committee on Transport and Communications.

Given that the topic of discussion today is essentially life and death, committee chairman Fianna Fáil Senator Gerry Horkan stated that this meeting may be the most significant the committee has ever had, reports RTE.

Insisting that he takes road safety “very seriously,” Mr. Harris has pledged to lower the number of road fatalities and conveyed his “deep concern.”

“I want to reassure this committee and the public, that there is certainly no organisational policy to reduce numbers in our Roads Policing Units,” his opening statement said, reports RTE.
