Robert F. Kennedy Jr, an environmental lawyer, anti-vaccine activist and son of a former senator, will announce Monday in Philadelphia that he is stepping down from the Democratic Party presidency and running as an independent, reports Breaking News.
Late last month, the Kennedy campaign made the announcement in a video posted on YouTube, promising a “sea change in American politics”.
Kennedy’s combination of wealthy supporters, a familiar name and a lack of enthusiasm for GOP front-runners Donald Trump or Joe Biden, the Democratic president up for re-election, could revive his campaign, political strategists say.
According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released last week, he could attract the support of one in seven US voters and win the votes of both Biden and Trump.
Party stalwarts expressed disgust and concern at last week’s Democratic National Committee meeting in St. Louis, reports Breaking News.
“Outside of his name, what does he have? He’s an anathema to his family’s legacy. It’s sort of a disgrace,” said Ken Martin, head of Minnesota’s Democratic Party, reports Breaking News.
Many Democrats also pointed to the challenges independent candidates face in gathering thousands of signatures, such as on general election ballots in many states.
