Roderic O’Gorman says 15,000 migrants per year will be ‘new normal’

Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman has stated that an average of 15,000 international protection applicants arriving in Ireland will become the “new normal”, reports Breaking News.

In an interview with the PA news agency, the Green Party minister also mentioned that his department is working more effectively with gardaí in response to protests outside accommodation centres.

The Green Party had promised to replace the much-criticised system of direct provision in the Programme for Government.

However, Mr O’Gorman expressed his disappointment at the fact that this has not been delivered, reports Breaking News.

He also mentioned that since he published the White Paper to End Direct Provision in 2021, the situation has drastically changed.

“Major war on the European continent has created a massive humanitarian challenge and one where Ireland has acted very strongly, decisively and been able to provide accommodation for more people than we’ve ever done in a similar circumstance,” reports Breaking News.
