When the media minister and the broadcaster’s new chair first met, one of their main concerns was fixing RTÉ’s funding, reports Breaking News.

The existing method for collecting TV licences is “archaic and out of date,” according to Terence O’Rourke.

Before the Dail summer holiday, Minister of Media Catherine Martin has promised to decide how to restructure RTE financing, reports Breaking News.

Direct exchequer funding and a new broadcasting levy that would be collected by Revenue rather than An Post are two ideas that are reportedly being considered.

In June of last year, the broadcaster faced a problem when it acknowledged that it had been understating the payments for Ryan Tubridy, its popular presenter and former top earner, reports Breaking News.
