An invitation has been issued to the Russian Ambassador to Ireland, asking him to attend at an Oireachtas Committee hearing next week so that a discussion can take place regarding Russia’s planned naval exercises due to take place in February off the Irish coast.

According to RTE, the Chair of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee Charlie Flanagan said that he had asked the Russian Ambassador to come to the Committee.  It is expected that the Irish government will make a further request for the exercises to be cancelled. An invitation has also be issued to the Ukrainian Ambassador to Ireland, Gerasko Larysa.

Separately, the Irish Fish Exporters and Processors Organisation told RTE that there are “more grounds for optimism” regarding discussions with the Russians over the exercises that are due to take place.
