Ryan says a new approach is needed as he doesn’t want baton charges on the streets

The Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan has commented on the violence that was seen in Dublin over the bank holiday weekend by saying that he doesn’t want baton charges and shields on the streets.

Speaking on RTÉ’s This Week programme, Ryan said that there must be a new approach to stop public disorder in Dublin city.

“What happened is deeply regrettable,” Mr Ryan said, adding “what we don’t want is baton charges and what we don’t want is shields.

“What we do want is the whole thing to be managed in a much more thought through manner.”

Many on social media feel that Ryan’s comments suggest that it’s up to the gardai to find an alternative to baton charges and shields.
