Search continues for man who fell overboard from yacht off Waterford coast

A large-scale air and sea search effort, launched over the weekend after a man was reported missing from a British yacht off the Waterford coast, is set to resume on Monday morning, reports The Mirror.

It’s believed the individual went overboard about 16 nautical miles south of Dunmore East in the Irish Sea on Saturday night.

The Irish Coast Guard, which is overseeing the operation, confirmed that their Coordination Centre in Dublin received a 999 emergency call from the yacht on Saturday night requesting help, reports The Mirror.

Dublin’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) has been directing the search efforts, which continued through Sunday afternoon.

However, the search was paused on Sunday night and will recommence on Monday morning.

In a statement issued Sunday evening, the Coast Guard said:
“The Coast Guard Coordination centre in Dublin has suspended an ongoing search for a man overboard from a UK registered yacht,” reports The Mirror.

“An extensive search of the area South of Dunmore East was conducted by Coast Guard resources from midnight on Saturday,” reports The Mirror.

“The search team included Coast Guard helicopters R117, R116, a UK Coast Guard fixed wing, Dunmore Lifeboat, Kilmore Quay and Ballycotton Lifeboats,” reports The Mirror.

“The search will resume on Monday morning.”

The rescue operation was initiated after an emergency call was made by the man still on board the yacht around 10.40pm.

The Coast Guard later located the vessel off the coast of Ceann Heilbhic in County Waterford, reports The Mirror.

The yacht is believed to have been travelling from Brighton to Swansea with a stop in Falmouth.

The second man on board was safely brought ashore by search and rescue teams, reports The Mirror.
