45-year-old Dafydd Hughes, from Cheltenham, UK, was in Ireland for less than two hours when a young man threatened to “gouge” his eye out. A struggle ensued, and the man lunged at Mr. Hughes with a broken bottle, inflicing a severe head wound.
The unprovoked attack happened at a tour bus stop on O’Connell St. in Dublin.
According to Mr. Hughes, his attacker appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, and maybe drugs too. Mr. Hughes’s sister, who is a medical doctor and was standing beside him at the stop, provided first aid as the assailant was subdued by a security guard from a nearby business.
Gardai soon arrived and arrested the offender.
But according to Mr. Hughes, the incident has not made him change his opinion about the friendly nature of the Irish people.
