Shark eats shark in South Korean aquarium

A shark has eaten another shark in a  South Korean aquarium. The largest shark at the visitor centre slowly ate a smaller shark in what has been described as a ‘turf war’.

The sand tiger shark is an eight-year-old female measuring 2.2m (7.2ft) long. It attacked the five-year-old male banded houndshark on Thursday.

Oh Tae-Youp, who works at the aquarium, said: “Sharks have their own territory. However, sometimes when they bump against each other, they bite out of astonishment. I think the shark swallowed the whole body, because they usually eat it all when they bite the head part.”

Sharks in captivity are known to fight and bite each other. However, instances of sharks eating their tank mates are rare.
