Shocking: Cost of building modular homes rises by 140%

The costs of building modular homes to alleviate the rampant homelessness crisis around Dublin have sharply risen by almost 140%, it has emerged today.

When the homes were first announced, Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly said they would cost around €100,000. That figure has now been put at €240,000 per home, more than the average cost of a ‘traditional’ house.

Sinn Féin TD Eoin Ó Broin has said that: “The latest revelations are genuinely shocking.
“We were originally told that these would be temporary homes that would be cheap to build and would provide people with relief from unsuitable emergency accommodation.
“We are now learning that they could be costing the tax-payer as much as €240,000.
“That is completely unacceptable, that money could be used to buy people permanent homes to live in.”
