The state of New York has officially enacted a new legislation that will allow for abortions up until birth.
According to FOX News, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the new Bill into law on Tuesday.
Since the signing of the Bill, Mr Cuomo has come in for strong criticism from pro-life groups after he advocated and signed the new Reproductive Health Act into law.
Many opposed to the bill have labelled the new law as extreme and dangerous to both women and the unborn.
Under the new law doctors are now allowed to conduct abortions and the procedure could be done until the mother’s due date if the woman’s health is endangered or if the fetus is not viable.
Although many have argued that the new law could be exploited given the terminology of the text within the Bill is unspecific, with many saying it refers to overall well-being rather than the health of the fetus or mother.
Under the previous law New York state only allowed for abortions after 24 weeks if the woman’s life was deemed to be at risk.
