Simon Harris and Spanish PM discuss recognising state of Palestine

This morning, Taoiseach Simon Harris discussed the prospect of both nations acknowledging the state of Palestine with Pedro Sanchez, the prime minister of Spain, reports RTE.

The phone conversation came after a bilateral meeting in April between the two presidents, at which the recognition of the state of Palestine by Spain and Ireland was the main item on the agenda.

The two “discussed the grave situation in the Middle East and their work together on the recognition of the State of Palestine” during today’s phone conversation, reports RTE.

Mr. Harris has stated in recent weeks that the official recognition of Palestine is almost upon us.

In a statement released following their phone call, the Taoiseach said: “We discussed the dire situation in the Middle East and particularly in Gaza and agreed to continue working together to push for an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional and immediate release of all remaining hostages and for a surge in humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza,” reports RTE.

“Prime Minister Sánchez and I shared our deep concern about reports that Israel has ordered an evacuation of civilians from parts of Rafah in preparation of a military operation. I reiterate my call on Israel not to undertake a full-scale military operation in Rafah. I also discussed with Prime Minister Sánchez our ongoing work together on recognising the State of Palestine,” reports RTE.
