Sinn Fein vice president and Northern Ireland deputy First Minister is under threat of attack from dissident republicans

Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister and Vice President of Sinn Fein Michelle O’Neill has said that she has been informed by police that dissident republicans are planning an attack on her and MLA for North Belfast Gerry Kelly.

The threats against them were issued after the two politicians attended a Police Service of Norther Ireland recruitment drive earlier this month.

Irish News reports that Ms O’Neil has acknowledged that threat saying:

I have been told by the PSNI that they have intelligence that dissident republicans are planning an attack against myself and Gerry Kelly,”

According to the BBC, the Deputy First Minister went on to say:
“These people have nothing to offer society. These people have clearly intent to attack myself and Gerry, our families. We are also aware this comes on the back of both myself and Gerry attending the PSNI recruitment fair last week.”

The news comes as in the Republic Sinn Fein have secured the second most seats in the Dáil and the largest share of first preference votes in a historic performance in the 2020 General Election.
