Sinn Fein’s motion passes declaring all of Waterford City & County an “LGBT+ Freedom Zone” – Gay pride flag to be flown on all council buildings for the entire month of June

Sinn Féin Councillors for Waterford City and County, Joeanne Bailey and John Hearne listed a motion in the Councils October session to “stand in solidarity with the LGBT+ community across Waterford City and County”.

The Sinn Fein motion stated:
“Pride exists to promote the dignity, equality and visibility of LGBT+ members of society”, “rejects and condemns the recent cowardly and insidious manifestations of homophobia and intolerance in Waterford City” and “recognises that these manifestations are not representative of the people of Waterford” reports the Waterford News and Star.

It is worth noting that the alleged Gay flag burning in Waterford attracted nationwide and international coverage. We previously confirmed that a man was arrested and attended court. There was no media coverage of the outcome of the court case and no-one was named by the media. No photos of the alleged gay flag burning.

The Sinn Fein motion also stated: “Waterford is a safe, tolerant and welcoming place for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender; undertakes to fly the Pride flag from Council buildings each June for the entirety of Pride Month; and hereby declares Waterford City and County an LGBT+ Freedom Zone.”

The motion was unanimously carried by all 32 Councillors.
