Sinn Fein’s Pearse Doherty says TDs 2% pay rise is tone deaf following PUP cuts

Sinn Fein’s finance spokesman Pearse Pearse Doherty has said TD’s 2% pay rise is “tone deaf” as the Pandemic Unemployment Payment is being cut.

Speaking to RTE’s Today Claire Byrne programme, Doherty said at the bare minimum TD’s who are currently earning over €90,000 per year should not take the pay rise especially given that so many people had their pandemic payment cut.

Doherty told the programme this week’s cuts to PUP will leave a lot of people facing financial hardship in the coming weeks and months ahead.

The Sinn Fein TD also said that although he agrees with the use of advisors, he said the appointment of 10 advisors for Junior Ministers was also wrong as it was too many given the pandemic.

He added at the time of cuts we see these pay rises and high paying positions being created which is tone deaf.

Doherty’s comments come as TD’s and other public sector workers are expected to receive a 2% pay increase as part Public Service Stability Agreement which was agreed back in June 2017.
