Ireland could ne struck by thundersnow, which occur when thunderstorms form during wintry conditions. It precedes a possible new storm this weekend.
Cold air will descend over Ireland from Wednesday evening and Met Eireann is forecast for sleet, snow, thunderstorms, hail and freezing temperatures.
This means some areas may experience a rare outburst of “thundersnow,” which occur when thunderstorms form during wintry conditions that are more common during the summer months.
In cold weather, the rain associated with a thunderstorm may fall as snow and is therefore referred to as thundersnow.
Thundersnow is meteorologically no different from thunder in summer, but instead of hail or rain there is snow, which can affect the acoustics of thunder.
The national forecaster said: “It will turn much colder early on Wednesday night as rain clears to the east.
“Showers will follow behind, falling as sleet and snow in places. Chance of isolated thunderstorms as well as hail, with lowest temperatures of -2C to 1C allowing for some frost and icy stretches to develop in mostly moderate southwest winds.”
