Spanish holidaymakers warned to be careful as temps to soar past 40C

The summer holiday season is just around the corner and thousands of Irish travellers are preparing to head to Spain’s sun-soaked beaches.

However, anyone travelling in the coming days may want to keep a close eye on the latest forecasts, as parts of the country are set to experience extreme heat, reports The Mirror.

Spain’s meteorological agency AEMET has already issued a number of high temperature weather warnings, with highs of 38C forecast in parts of Seville and temperatures in Barcelona, Tarragona and Madrid potentially hitting 36C.

Conditions are forecast to become even more intense over the coming days, with current projections suggesting temperatures could climb above 40C in parts of Spain next week, reports The Mirror.

AEMET warned that “a notable rise in temperatures is expected over the weekend,” adding that the heat was likely to intensify as the week progressed.

The agency said: “The heat will increase. Between the end of this week and the beginning of the next, temperatures could be among the highest recorded for those dates,” reports The Mirror.

The latest spell of hot weather comes after several June temperature records have already been broken across Spain.

In A Coruña, the mercury climbed to 35.9C on 13 June, beating the previous June record by 1.1C, while at the city’s airport temperatures reached 37.7C, matching the all-time record previously set in August 2003, reports The Mirror.

Further north, Gijón also experienced record-breaking conditions with temperatures reaching 31.6C, surpassing the previous June maximum, while night-time temperatures were also unusually elevated, with A Coruña recording a minimum of 21.3C overnight — more than a degree above the previous record — and Gijón registering a minimum of 20.7C.

AEMET said: “The week of June 15 will be hot in much of Spain. The weekend and the start of the following week, the heat could intensify, with very high temperatures. There is still uncertainty. We will continue to follow the evolution of the forecasts and update the information,” reports The Mirror.

Given these extreme conditions, experts are advising Irish holidaymakers to take precautions including staying well hydrated, avoiding peak sun hours and monitoring local weather updates, reports The Mirror.
