Speculation that resigned Tasoieach Varadkar may be seeking a position in the EU

Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar may have his sights set a senior position in the EU after suffering a humiliating defeat the polls which saw his party, Fine Gael come third behind Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil for the first time in history.

This is what Ray Basset, the former Irish ambassador to Canada, Jamaica and the Bahamas, told Express.co.uk, saying that “many in Ireland believe that Varadkar has his eye on a future post with a European Institution.”

While Varadkar has said he intends to lead Fine Gael in opposition there has been widespread speculation that his position as leader of the party in now untenable having suffered such a profound rebuttal from the voting public.

Not only did Leo Varadkar lead Fine Gael into its worst placing in the Dáil ever but he had only served as Taoiseach for around two and a half years, the second shortest tenure of any Taoiseach in Irish history. He was beaten for first place by former Fine Gael leader John Bruton in the 1990s.
