Emergency services across the country are urging parents and guardians to adhere to safety advice this Halloween.

Halloween night is traditionally one of the busiest times of the year for fire and ambulance services, with almost 300 ambulance calls received by emergency services on Halloween night last year, while Dublin Fire Brigade reported over 600 call outs in the 24-hour period.

The National Ambulance Service is urging parents and guardians to keep themselves and children visible to motorists when out trick or treating and to stay together in groups.

To prevent accidents, children’s costumes should be checked to make sure they are not too long or have too much loose fabric.

If attending bonfires, children should always be accompanied by an adult and never stand too close to the flames.

A spokesperson for Dublin Fire Brigade has said, although bonfires are illegal they will only extinguish those that pose a risk to people and property.

They have also asked that members of the public allow the fire brigade to carry out their jobs unhindered.
