Standing together: 35,000 nurses are going on strike today and Leo isn’t happy

Around 35,000 nurses are about to down tools this morning and strike over a pay disagreement and poor working conditions.

The planned strike is going ahead tomorrow as scheduled, as last-minute talks to avert it collapsed yesterday.

The strike will last a full 24 hours after a bitter row over poor pay and dire working conditions at Irish hospitals could not be resolved.

It appears as though the Taoiseach couldn’t care less about the nurses as he said he was saddened that they were striking on a Wednesday rather than the weekend and also that “it wouldn’t be fair on taxpayers” if he gave the nurses more money.

Medical facilities are understood to be bracing themselves for the impact of the strike, as it happens to coincide with some of the coldest weather this winter, which may lead to increased admissions.

It’s understood that triage nurses will be delegated by individual strike groups on the day.
