Summer solstice: Today is the longest day of the year

Today, June 21st is the summer solstice and is officially the longest day of the year.

The summer solstice along with the winter solstice are events that determine the year by reference to both the solstices and the equinoxes.

Today will officially see the most daylight that Ireland will receive in 2019 with sunsets around the country said to be well past 10pm tonight.

Many people gather at Newgrange, Co. Meath to witness the sunlight come through a passageway on this day every year.
