From Mick McCarthy to Ian Rush, all the past legends of Liverpool and Ireland came together last night for a special night for Liverpool fan Sean Cox.
Household names of Dalglish, Keane, McAteer, Whelan, Aldridge, McManaman, and Berger painted the Aviva in green and red.
Sean Cox himself made his first public appearance since he was viciously assaulted at the Champions League semi-final in April 2018.
Sean had gone to the game with his brother Martin to watch Liverpool and AS Roma at Anfield. Tragically he was set upon by an Italian man. Sean has been left with life-changing injuries that he’s slowly but surely recovering from.
Liverpool legend Ian Rush spoke on Liverpool TV of the charity match between Republic of Ireland XI and Liverpool Legends:
“We see ourselves as one big family and if someone gets hurt in your family, you try and help them. And that’s what Liverpool Football Club are doing.”
Sean thanked people for their support with a thumbs up. His image flashed up on the big screen and the entire stadium got up on their feet and clapped. It was something special, this reporter was one of those who jumped up and clapped the Meath man.
