Survivors and families of the Stardust fire victims welcome the news of a new inquest into the disaster

Survivors and family members of those who perished in the Stardust fire have welcomed the news of a fresh inquest into the disaster.

Forty-eight young people died inside the Stardust night club in Dublin on Valentine’s Night in 1981.

An early inquest ruled that the probable cause of the fire was arson. This ruling, which was later discredited, did however enable the nightclub’s owner, Eamon Butterly, to file and be awarded a claim against the State of more than £580,000 for ‘malicious damage.’

To date, no one has been held accountable for the fire.
