System for Medical Card holders at public dentists under threat

There are widespread concerns for the public dentist practice as a leading professional has warned that a scheme that provides public dentists in cities and towns across the country is on the brink.

According to the Irish Dental Association Chief Executive Fintan Hourihan, the number of public dentists across the country are dramatically in decline.

Speaking to RTE News, Hourihan warned that the system of public dentists for Medical Card holders is under threat unless there are major changes to the system.

He told RTE News, that a total of 600 dentists have withdrawn from the scheme since 2019 and the effects have been seen around the country.

Hourihan said the system needs to be addressed as many in the profession will turn to private practice and it will leave many being unable to afford proper dental care.

The IDA chief said that a number of factors has resulted in many leaving the scheme citing rising insurance costs and lack of assistance from the state.
