Talks between Fine Gael and Fianna Fail break down

Enda Kenny and Micheal Martin continue their endless pussyfooting around each other tonight, as a meeting for further talks on the formation of government was cancelled at the last minute. As it stands, no further talks are planned.

The cancellation comes ahead of a new vote on the election of Taoiseach tomorrow. Such vote is not expected to yield any clear outcome, however.

The issue of Irish Water has raised its ugly head once more. Again highlighting the unmitigated disaster that the utility has become, Fine Gael stick to their guns and say that water charges will stay. Fianna Fail are, at least outwardly, opposed to the charges.

Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin has now said that the offer of a Fianna Fail-led minority government will be withdrawn if his party does not get more votes than Fine Gael.
