Tánaiste says there are ‘no guarantees’ when the next General Election will be held

The Tánaiste and Labour Party leader Joan Burton has refused to be drawn on speculation regarding the possibility of an early General Election.

Ms Burton told reporters last night that there is absolutely “no guarantees” that the general election will be held before next year. However the Tánaiste did say she has had numerous conversations with the Taoiseach Enda Kenny about the possibility of it occurring, although she claims every conversation ends with the election taking place at some point in 2016.

The news comes after the Taoiseach yet again refused to give fellow TD’S in the Dáil a set date for the election yesterday afternoon. Ms Burton refused to be drawn on Mr Kenny’s lack of a response, instead saying nothing can be guaranteed, but she did say she does not think an early election is likely.
Ms Burton told reporters: “Well, I wouldn’t bet on that, I don’t know if you’ve been down to the bookies but I wouldn’t bet on it.”
