Taoiseach Micheál Martin says he’s looking forward to working with Pope Leo XIV

In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as Pope Leo XIV on May 10, 2025, becoming the first American pontiff. Taoiseach Micheál Martin, warmly congratulated the new pope, expressing his eagerness to work together on global challenges.

Speaking from Dublin, Martin praised Pope Leo XIV’s election, saying, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. His life of service, from his missionary work in Peru to his leadership in the Vatican, reflects a deep commitment to compassion and justice. Ireland looks forward to collaborating with him to promote peace, human rights, and solidarity worldwide.”

The Taoiseach highlighted the pope’s potential to inspire, noting, “In a time of global division, Pope Leo XIV’s call for unity and dialogue resonates strongly. His pastoral heart and global perspective make him a powerful voice for the marginalized. I am confident we can work together to address issues like poverty, climate change, and conflict resolution.”

Pope Leo XIV, addressing crowds in St. Peter’s Square after his election, emphasized a shared journey, saying, “We are called to walk together toward a world of hope and love.” His words struck a chord with Martin, who has long advocated for Ireland’s role in international peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts.

The leader of Fianna Fáil, Martin underscored Ireland’s historic ties with the Vatican, stating, “The Catholic Church has played a significant role in Ireland’s story, and we value our continued partnership. I look forward to engaging with Pope Leo XIV to advance our shared values.”, reports RTE.

The election of the 69-year-old Augustinian, known for his writings on spirituality and canon law, has sparked global optimism. Martin’s pledge to collaborate signals Ireland’s commitment to supporting Pope Leo XIV’s vision for a more just and compassionate world, with plans for a potential papal visit to Ireland already under discussion.
