Taoiseach says he doesn’t expect a General Election this year

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said that he does not intend to hold a General Election this year.

Speaking to RTÉ’s Today with Sean O’Rourke programme, the Taoiseach said that he doesn’t expect an election this year, but is instead focusing on the upcoming Budget which could be potentially be impacted by Brexit.

Although Varadkar admitted that the decision is not entirely his call, he did reiterate that negotiations with Fianna Fáil leader Mícheál Martin last year has all but ruled out an election in 2019.

The Taoiseach told the programme that the negotiations with Mr Martin last year came after he requested that a General Election will not be held until the summer of 2020.

However the Taoiseach did reveal that Mr Martin rejected those proposals, before suggesting the possibility of a post Brexit poll next spring.

He added that both he and Mr Martin believe that it wouldn’t be in the country’s interest to hold an early election given the uncertainty surrounding Brexit.
