Taoiseach Varadkar defends Housing Minister over co-living developments – saying it is an option

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has defended the Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy over recent comments in regards to proposed co-living developments.

Speaking in the Dáil this afternoon, Mr Varadkar seemingly defended Mr Murphy after he said such proposals are only an option and not an overall solution to the housing crisis.

Varadkar who came in for strong criticism from Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald, said the Government plans to build 20,000 to 25,000 new homes to solve the crisis, but 1% of those would be co-living developments.

The Taoiseach’s comments come after it was recently revealed that Bartra Capital plan to be build a co-living development in Dun Laoghaire.

It is that the development if approved by An Board Pleanála would see bedsits measuring 16.5 square metres (around the size of a disabled parking space) style arrangements being put in place at the complex costing in the region of €1,300 per month.
