It is understood the investigation comes after the young child found the remains of the device whilst playing in the garden of his home in Curlew Way, in the Waterside area of the city.
Although thankfully the boy was unharmed, police say they are trying to determine how the remains of the device ended up in the garden.
Officers investigating the case say they are appealing to anyone who may have any information to contact them at Strand Road on the non emergency number 101, quoting reference number 2084 of 21/05/19.
