TD Joan Collins facing charges alongside Jobstown Protestors

original

The United Left Alliance TD Joan Collins has received a summons to appear in court following her arrest at a water meter protest on April 20th 2015.

Collins was among 13 people arrested in connection with a protest against the installation of water meters in South Dublin.

Following her arrest she was taken to Terenure Garda Station and later released without charge. However a file was later sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Deputy Collins’ summons states that the Dáil deputy was acting in a manner contrary to the Criminal Justice Public Order Act.

It also alleges she was loitering in a public place which gave rise to a reasonable apprehension for the safety of persons and property and failed to comply with the orders of a garda.

Ms Collins is due before the Courts of Criminal Justice on 2 November, the same day and the same court as the 27 protestors from the Jobstown protest – including Socialist Party TD Paul Murphy and two South Dublin County councillors, Kieran Mahon and Mick Murphy.

They face charges of falsely imprisoning the Tánaiste and her special advisor in Jobstown, Tallaght last November, a charge with carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

A protest against the issuing of court proceedings is being held in Dublin at 1pm today, marching from the Central Bank, Dame Street to the CCJ on Park Gate Street.
