Teachers not likely to be prioritised as Education Minister says vaccine roll-out plan is based on science

Teachers hoping to be given priority for the Covid-19 vaccine have been left disappointed as the Minister for Education Norma Foley has said that the changes to the roll-out plan is based on science.

Speaking at the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation congress, Foley said the latest evidence states that the vaccination programme should be rolled-out on an age based system as it is the strongest predictor to whether or not someone will be admitted to hospital or is likely to die from contracting the virus.

Foley told the congress that the decision is purely based on scientific evidence and that it wasn’t a value of judgement on any given profession but it was just simply science.

The Education Minister’s comments come after all teachers unions have backed proposals that could potentially include industrial action if the Government decides not to prioritise their members for vaccination.

It is expected that all three teachers unions could give a decision on any such action could in the coming days.
