Tensions between the world’s two most populated nations have soared after Chinese and Indian troops clashed along the border in the latest of a number of similar incidents in past few years.

A spokesman for the Indian Ministry of Defence confirmed that a skirmish took place at a remote, mountainous crossing close to Tibet, which results in four Indian and seven Chinese soldiers being slightly injured.

The two nuclear powers have had a number of standoffs and skirmishes since they fought a brief border war in 1962, the serious recent incident taking place in 2017 when both countries had a month-long standoff over the disputed Doklam plateau on the Bhutan-China border.

India has acted as a guarantor for the border security and independence of the tiny Himalayan nation of Bhutan against potential Chinese aggression.

China is currently embroiled in numerous border disputes with its neighbours, both on land and sea, buts its tensions with India are particularly worrisome due to the sheer size of the two nations and the fact that both posses nuclear weapons.
